First quick post about Turkey…

HELSINKI-As my move to Istanbul gets closer I’m beginning to blog more about Turkey.

It is new territory for me, yet a place that combines the strongest of my interests.

In the aftermath of the arrests surrounding the alleged coup plot, the ruling AK party has proposed a series of constitutional amendments to reduce the power of the judiciary.

The NYT has a piece on that here.

What finally is being reported on is that many of the proposed amendments and even AK’s moves to reign in the military are meant to meet requirements for Turkey joining the EU.

This article is one of the first that did not make AK out to be Islamists trying to impede democracy in Turkey. That is what the country’s opposition is claiming, yet the fact that reducing the power of the judiciary and military is in line with what the EU has long demanded of Turkey.

If the constitutional amendments do not pass they will most likely be put to a vote, something that I will be in the country to cover if it happens.
