ISTANBUL- There are lots of flags out today.

Today is the anniversary of Atatürk beginning the Turkish war of independence.

After the battles were won he declared 19 May national Youth and Sports day. Not a bad idea and children are supposed to lead the commemorations and be reminded of the values of democracy and secularism that Atatürk founded the country on, instilling them from generation to generation.

I passed preparations for a military ceremony in Taksim Square but otherwise the flags were the only indication of the anniversary. Was in a new area of town today. Lots of tall buildings and glass. Almost got confused as to where I was. But this is Turkey. All indications are that more tall buildings and glass will be arriving in the near future.
