Pristina, Kosovo- Arriving in Pristina this morning, there was no shortage of traffic and no shortage of US flags flying next to the Kosovo flag. There was also quite a few billboards such as the one pictured above, welcoming US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to town. She is expected to arrive here tomorrow, after visiting Bosnia and Serbia. The trip is meant to reaffirm US support for the region and call for co-operation in divided Bosnia and dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo.

Below is a photo of German KFOR soldiers I made in Prizren, Kosovo in February 2008, a few days before Kosovo Albanians declared independence from Serbia. Though Albanians make clear that they are thankful for the support for their independence bid there is also a popular and growing “self-determination” movement that is pushing for the international community to leave Kosovo and for the new country to more fully govern itself. I will include an interview with a member of the movement in my article on Clinton’s visit tomorrow.

  1. I was in Kosovo at the time Hillary was there. It was a peaceful experiance. People out of respect call her Sister of Kosovo. They have great respect for her. It made me proud to be part of the affair.
and more proud to be an American. We must help these people to once again to become whole. Keep them free of harm this is why the war, to be free, not to be used as slaves into dictatership MG
